28-year old Devin Johnson is locked up, charged 2nd degree murder for the stabbing death of his mother at their home on Jacaranda Pkwy W. The body of 69-year old Rosemary Johnson was discovered by Cape Coral police after family members were unable to reach her.
A neighborhood canvass led to the discovery that Devin Johnson was observed leaving the home in a 2019 gray Toyota Corolla shortly before police arrived on scene. A BOLO (Be On the Lookout) for Johnson was then circulated to surrounding agencies. Family members told detectives that Johnson had a documented history of domestic violence and substance abuse. Authorities also determined Johnson had purchased a plane ticket to Costa Rica.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Aviation and Patrol Deputies assisted Cape Coral police in quickly locating the vehicle in their jurisdiction and attempted a traffic stop. Johnson evaded law enforcement, but LCSO Aviation continued to keep eyes on the vehicle as Johnson traveled into Collier County. Collier County Deputies disabled Johnson’s vehicle using stop-sticks at 11200 Tamiami Trail North in Naples.
Johnson exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Collier County Deputies chased him on foot and took him down. Due to his aggressive resistance to law enforcement, a Cape Coral Police Department K9 was utilized to complete his capture. While trying to put cuffs on Johnson, he struck the K9 multiple times, and attempted to take an officer’s firearm.
The vehicle driven by Johnson was seized by law enforcement and officers noted the presence of blood on the exterior and interior. Johnson’s shoes also had noticeable blood on them.
Johnson was first booked into the Collier County Jail for criminal charges including Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement, Battery on Law Enforcement, Attempting to take a Law Enforcement Officer’s Firearm, and Animal Cruelty.
During the time Johnson was fleeing, Cape Coral Police Department Violent Crimes Detectives and our Forensics Unit were actively working the crime scene at 4338 Jacaranda Pkwy W.
Devin Johnson is the sole suspect in this homicide, and has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder.
