As the search for funding continues to widen the final stretch of Burnt Store Road in Cape Coral, the Lee Board of County Commissioners plans to add a few safety measures from Van Buren Parkway north to Vincent Avenue.
The Cape Coral City Council has been pushing Lee County to complete the Burnt Store Road widening project, especially in light of the deaths of several people at the end of 2025.
About 5.7 miles of Burnt Store Road is on the Lee County list of road projects to be widened. The problem is there’s no funding set aside for the project and the estimated cost is nearly $200 million. County Board Member Brian Hamman has even suggested Cape Coral kick in some funding to help get the project completed sooner. Cape Coral Council members soundly rejected that idea.
The safety improvements are estimated to cost just under $6 million with permitting to take 6-9 months and construction to take another 9 months. Here’s what the county plans to do:
– Add rumble stripes on the edge lines and along the center line to alert drivers if they cross out of the travel lanes.
– Adding two 1.06 mile long passing lanes.
– Adding 4-foot paved shoulders
